Chapter Twenty

"The big thing is," Flynn said, "you can download a ton of books from the library." He gave Riley that crooked grin she was coming to like altogether too much. "Might save you a couple of trips a week. You just go to the library website, check the e-book selection, tell it what you want, and it'll send it to the vendor and you download it like any other book. I tried it to make sure."

He'd done all this. For them. Did he never stop?

"I didn't deregister it," he went on, "but you can if you have an account and want to re-register it on yours."

"I don't. I don't dare," Riley said, still not quite believing this was happening. But how could she turn this down? This was for Gracie, who so rarely asked for anything. And this, this would be the biggest gift she'd had in her young life.

"Then it can stay on mine. I'll make sure you've got access so you can have control over what she sees."

Riley couldn't help but wonder at the look he gave her then, even as the idea of a joint account of any kind with him made her a little breathless. Was that why he looked hesitant? It wasn't like sharing an online account for book downloads was some kind of declaration. Should she reassure him that she understood that? Or would that just betray her silly thoughts? Thankfully, before she blurted out something stupid, he went on.

"I cleared out my stuff. Not that I had anything really...inappropriate on it," he said, a little hastily. "For her, I mean. But there's not any kids’ books on it. Not yet, anyway. She'll change that, I imagine. Although I'm guessing she reads way above what most people would think is her level."

His words sounded like her thoughts had, short, choppy. He was nervous, she realized suddenly. And she wondered why, wondered what it would take to make a man who had been through everything he'd been through nervous.

And she thought it was the sweetest thing in the world, that he was worried about his content and Gracie. "Yes, she does. Is there any plant stuff? She seems to have developed a...strong interest."

Heaven help her, she'd almost said passion. And that was a word that hadn't been in her mind in conjunction with a man in a very, very long time. But it had been about a subject, not the man she was discussing it with. Hadn't it?

But he smiled at her question, and suddenly she wasn't so sure. She was far too fond of that crooked smile, in far too short a time. Your judgment about men sucks, remember?

True, but she didn't think Jimmy's dad's judgment did.

"Yes," he answered. "She can re-download those, if you want." He hesitated, then asked, "Does this mean...you'll take it? For Gracie?"

She drew in a deep breath, and gave him a wry smile. "You know she's my weak spot. My vulnerability."

"I thought of it more as the best infiltration point," he said neutrally.
